How to Create, Sell & Market Your Own Framer Templates

Nabeel

Founder @ SegmentUI

Framer templates have been all the craze recently. Designers and even non designers are making 4-5 figures a month from selling their templates. It's the ultimate creator dream. Work on your own terms, no clients to boss you around, infinate earning potential and detatch your earning from your time. In this guide, I will go over everything from making your first pixel in Framer to marketing and earning from your templates.

Why Templates?

Unlike traditional client work, where income is directly tied to hours worked, template sales allow you to create once and profit repeatedly. This model of passive income not only has the potential to boost your earnings but also grants you the freedom to detach your income from your time. As your template library grows, so does your earning potential, without necessarily increasing your workload. In addition to that, you can set your own hours and you have full creative ownership. Templates are also a good way to attract clients if that's also something you want to explore.

Step 1 - Learn Basic Framer Concepts

Creating a successful Framer template begins with education. If you're completely unaware of how Framer works and how to create basic designs in Framer, you will have a hard time creating a template. So, I recommend going through a few basic videos on how Framer works before getting started. If you're already familiar with Framer, you can skip this part and go straight to the creating. For starters, you can check out our free course compilation or paid course compilations. You don't have to be a Framer Pro before starting. But knowing the basics can sure help.

Step 2 - Research

Research is crucial when creating and selling Framer templates for several key reasons:

You could spend months creating templates. However, if no one wan't your templates, it will be a pointless pursuit. Knowing what to make by studying the market will give you a tremendous edge.

  1. Study Existing Templates in the Marketplace: By studying existing templates and their popularity, you can identify what types of designs and functionalities are in high demand. This insight allows you to create templates that are more likely to sell, saving you time and effort on products that may not resonate with buyers. Research prevents you from reinventing the wheel. By knowing what's already available, you can focus on creating unique templates or improving upon existing concepts. This differentiation is key to standing out in a competitive marketplace. Try to dissect what makes a template popular, what key design elements make them stand out and repeat the process for as many other templates as you can

  2. Study Trends: Is it the season of productised design? Is it the season for dark design? What trends are popping, what's new? This will give you a small edge in saturated markets

  3. Study Other Markets: Don't limit your research to just Framer or web design. Explore other design marketplaces like Webflow template gallery, X/Twitter, Dribbble, Layers and platforms to gain a broader understanding of current design trends and user needs

Step 3 - Create a Template

Once you have your research and basics ready, you can begin creating your template. A successful template isn't just about aesthetics; it's a comprehensive package that offers value to its users. Here are the key characteristics to focus on:

  1. Great Visual Design: Your template should be visually stunning and adhere to current design principles. Pay attention to color schemes, typography, and overall layout. Remember, first impressions matter, and a visually appealing template is more likely to attract potential buyers.

  2. Extremely Thorough and Deep: Include multiple pages or screens, various components, and different use cases. The more comprehensive your template, the more value it provides to users, justifying its price and increasing conversions.

  3. Good Copy: Often overlooked, the text within your template is crucial. Use clear, concise, and engaging copy that complements the design. Well-written headings, button text, and placeholder content can resonate with your target audience and help visualise using your template

  4. Beautiful Interactions: It's super easy to create stunning interaction with Framer. Try to add interactions rather than adding static images. If you're looking to speedtrack this, check out our asset library

  5. Unique code components: Stand out from the crowd by including custom code components that aren't readily available elsewhere. This could be certain scroll animations/form upgrades, CMS power ups, mouse interactions or some cheeky animations.

  6. Good Thumbnails & Screenshots: This is just the icing on the cake but a good thumbnail will make you stand out among the sea of templates and increase your click through rate

Step 4 - Submit Your Template

Once you've crafted your high-quality Framer template, it's time to prepare for launch. The submission process involves several key steps to ensure your template is properly set up for sale

  1. Join Affiliate Program: Joining Framer's affiliate program is an excellent way to maximize your earnings from template sales. This program allows you to earn 50% of every subscription you bring in, creating an additional revenue stream beyond your template sales. You can Sign up for the affiliate program here. You'll gain access to a dashboard where you can track clicks, referrals, customers, and payouts. Whether your template is free or paid, you'll earn commissions when users convert to paid Framer plans

  2. Create a Lemonsqueezy Store: Lemonsqueezy is the preferred e-commerce platform for Framer templates. You can use Gumroad as well but they charge double the fees so I would recommend Lemonsqueezy. Once your store is active, you can create a product, add relevant details and media and get your template link. Include high-quality screenshots, a detailed description of features and benefits, and any unique selling points. Be sure to use clear, persuasive language that highlights how your template solves specific design challenges.

  3. Submit to Marketplace: Finally, submit your template to the Framer Marketplace. Follow their guidelines to ensure a smooth submission process. This typically involves providing all necessary files, setting your price, and agreeing to marketplace terms. Once approved, your template will be live and available for purchase by Framer users. If theres anything missing, the team will reach out to you for updating. Usually, the Marketplace is your largest traffic generator.

Step 5 - Marketing

This is the part where most people have trouble. I made a detailed guide on how to sell more digital products but in summary:

  • Use as many platforms as possible to promote your product. I use Buffer, a scheduling tool, to post content across multiple platforms like X (Twitter), Insta, LinkedIn etc simultaneously.

  • Beyond social media, focus on getting featured in curation lists and inspiration galleries, which can provide consistent traffic. Create YouTube tutorials and blog content around your templates, targeting what your audience is searching for. Optimize your template descriptions and related content for SEO to improve visibility.

  • Build an email list using free products as lead magnets, allowing you to promote directly to interested users.

  • Actively engage in the Framer Community channel for additional exposure.

  • Throughout your marketing efforts, use platform-specific discount codes to track where your sales are coming from, and regularly analyze your performance using tools like Google Analytics.
